About Us!

What is the Montvale Rescue Squad?

It is a group of citizens from the Montvale area who volunteer their time and services without any remuneration at all.  We stand ready to answer the call for emergency medical assistance 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  We are incorporated by the Emergency Medical Services, Virginia State Department of Health, and authorized to provide emergency medical services for Montvale and surrounding areas.  We work in cooperation with Montvale Fire Department and even work together on the same emergencies when the situations for such arise.

"The Petticoat Crew"

In the beginning Montvale had mostly women in the squad along with the first Female Captain in Virginia earning Montvale Rescue the nickname of " The Petticoat Crew" as coined  in the local newspaper at the time.

  A Brief History

The Montvale Rescue Squad was organized in May 1970 with an original memberhip of 19 persons and began active service on September 1st of that year.  It has served the community continuously now for 34 years. The Fire Department building was used as the base of operations until the first squad building was built in 1976.  We have answered over 250 calls for help each year, have driven our vehicles over 8,000 miles annually, and have expended more than 1,000 man hours of volunteer service annually.  There are at present 24 active volunteers with training ranging from Emergency Vehicle Operations to Paramedic.

Join the Team!

Currently, there are 26 active members on our crew.  Each call team is on call every third night and all day on Saturdays and Sundays. Last year,  we responded to over 250 calls.  Crew members are on call even on birthdays, anniversaries, and national holidays.  They are also responsible for educating the community, organizing events and fundraisers, and caring for the crewhall (both equipment and grounds). In addition, to working 40 hours a week at a paying full-time job ?  These volunteers also have families, friends, and a social life.  Their lives are just as busy and hectic as any other person, but one thing sets them apart.  Each member is dedicated to making sure that when YOU dial 9-1-1 there IS someone to answer the call with the necessary equipment.
